Ramana Maharshi, born as Venkataraman Iyer on December 30, 1879, in Tiruchuli, Tamil Nadu, India, was one of the most revered spiritual masters of the 20th century. He attained enlightenment at the age of 16 after a profound spiritual awakening, prompting him to renounce worldly life and dedicate himself entirely to spiritual pursuits.
His teachings centered on self-inquiry, particularly the practice of "Who am I?" as a means to realize one's true nature beyond the ego. He taught that the ultimate reality, the Self or Atman, could be directly experienced through introspection and self-awareness.
In 1896, Sri Ramana Maharshi left his family home and journeyed to the sacred hill of Arunachala, where he spent the rest of his life. Settling in a small cave on the hillside, he immersed himself in deep meditation, focused entirely on the inner quest for self-realization. His seminal work, "Who am I?" (Nan Yar?), encapsulates his core teachings on self-inquiry and has been translated into numerous languages.
Despite his profound spiritual realization, Ramana Maharshi remained humble and accessible to all seekers who sought his guidance. He welcomed visitors from diverse backgrounds and offered solace and support without regard to their beliefs.
Ramana Bhagavan passed away on April 14, 1950, yet his spiritual legacy continues to inspire millions worldwide. His teachings on self-inquiry, non-duality, and inner peace guide seekers on the path to self-realization and liberation from suffering. The ashram he established at the foot of Arunachala, known as Sri Ramana Ashram, remains a revered spiritual center where devotees gather to meditate, study his teachings, and honor his profound spiritual presence.
